Cadets Tong and Yarte-Zertuche Earn STEM Camp Scholarships

Cadets Yu-Jen Tong '22 and Gorka-Aitor Yarte-Zertuche '23 have earned scholarships to a virtual summer camp at Missouri University of Science and Technology where they will explore the field of engineering. The Jackling Introduction to Engineering camp exposes high school students to various engineering disciplines, offering interactive workshops on software development, aerospace testing and problem-solving, exploration of state-of-the-art engineering materials breakthroughs, and the process of product development and testing.

The cadets’ scholarships have been generously donated by MMA alumnus Chris Schafer ʼ89, vice president of oilfield chemical company Apex Resources. Schafer, a geological engineer, established the summer camp scholarships in 2018 in hopes of inspiring cadet interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. Each scholarship covers the complete cost of the camp.

Tong of Shanghai, China, and Yarte-Zertuche of Lisbon, Portugal are the fifth and sixth recipients of the scholarship. Both will attend the engineering camp June 20-24, 2021.
