Giving Back to MMA & Guiding International Cadet Success: Rodrigo Padilla '15

For Rodrigo Padilla, returning to MMA is a chance to give back to the place that helped shape who he is today.

An MMA alumnus from the Class of 2015, Padilla now serves as an international cadet relations specialist, helping young men from around the world navigate their journey to the same Academy that helped define his own path.

“Being back at MMA feels like coming full circle,” Padilla says. “I’m passionate about helping the next generation of young men grow into confident leaders.”

Originally from El Salvador, Padilla credits his time as a cadet, especially serving as Echo Company first sergeant in his senior year, with instilling in him the values of discipline, teamwork and service. After earning his Bachelor of Arts from Missouri Valley College, he returned to MMA in 2024 to help others discover their potential.

Padilla’s role today focuses on guiding international cadets and their families through the admissions process. However, his influence extends far beyond paperwork. Whether helping at athletic events, mentoring cadets or simply being present in everyday Academy life, he’s always ready to go the extra mile.

“At the end of the day, I want to be known as someone who made a difference, someone who uplifted others and always stayed true to himself,” he says.

How would you describe what you do at MMA?
From the first inquiry to enrollment and arrival on campus, I guide families every step of the way, answering questions, providing resources and making sure each student feels prepared and welcomed.

What do you hope every MMA cadet learns during their time here?
MMA is more than a school. It’s an opportunity to discover who you really are and who you are capable of becoming. I learned here that leadership isn’t about a title. It’s about responsibility, humility and the impact you have on those around you.

What do you wish all parents knew about life at MMA for cadets?
As someone who went through the program myself, and now works here helping guide young men every day, I can say with confidence: you can trust MMA to bring out the very best in your son.

Can you share a memorable MMA moment from your time as an employee?
One of my favorite moments was during the soccer season when our cadets made it to the state semifinal in fall 2024, something that hadn’t happened in 32 years. It was an incredible moment of pride, job and total admiration for their hard work and heart.

Who had the most influence on you growing up, and why?
Growing up, the person who had the most influence on me wasn’t someone I knew personally. It was the character of Captain America, created by Stan Lee. It might sound childish to some, but to me, he represented everything I wanted to be: selfless, brave and driven by a strong moral compass.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
It doesn't matter who you used to be. What matters is who you decide to be today. You are not your mistakes. You are not your mishaps. You are not your past. You can decide differently today and at every moment. Remember that. You are offered a new opportunity with each breath to think, decide, choose and act differently.
