Preparing for the ACT: MMA Faculty Receive Professional Development Training Focused on Helping Cadets

Focused on helping cadets prepare for the ACT, Missouri Military Academy faculty recently benefited from professional development training with Naviance, the Academy's chosen online resource to provide a comprehensive college and career readiness solution for cadets and their families.

On Sept. 11, 2019, a Naviance trainer visited MMA to lead a professional development training for all teachers. The training centered on educating MMA faculty on utilizing Naviance Test Prep with cadets for a more comprehensive understanding of the games, tips and strategies provided through Naviance for ACT prep. MMA faculty use Naviance Test Prep to create individualized test taking plans, and cadets use Naviance Test Prep weekly (completing the practice exercises determines a portion of their seminar grade).

On Sept. 13, 2019, several administrators and department chairs attended an ACT conference in Kansas City in which they learned more detailed breakdown of the ACT and how to scaffold students in preparation for the test. Through scaffolding, faculty use a variety of instructional techniques to move students progressively toward stronger understanding and greater independence in the learning process. The MMA team also learned ways in which various departments can incorporate ACT content into daily instruction and practice within the classrooms.

“It is my pleasure to be part of the MMA team this school year. We have been developing a comprehensive ACT Improvement Plan that we believe will greatly benefit our cadets. It is our goal to prepare our cadets for acceptance into a college of their choice," said Dr. Thomas Allen, Assistant Dean of Student Services. Dr. Allen holds 30 years of experience as an educator, with 11 of those years as a college and career counselor.

ACT resource books will soon be implemented in various classes by multiple content departments to also aid cadets. MMA will host an ACT Bootcamp later this academic year (stay tuned for the date and details!), to help cadets learn tips and techniques for ACT responses.
