Missouri Military Academy Wrestlers Advance to State Tournament

Team Recap

On February 27, Missouri Military Academy (MMA) fielded seven all-district wrestlers for the Class 1 Sectional 1 Tournament. Of those who competed, three will advance to the state tournament on March 10, and four earned all-sectional honors.

Of note, it has been 24 seasons since MMA has boosted a two-time state qualifier.  This year, we have not only one, but two – Christopher Bryant is a returning state qualifier from last year, and Juan Pedro Garduno Miranda is a returning state qualifier from 2019.

Christopher Bryant ’21 – State Qualified, All-Sectional Honors

At the 182-pound weight class, returning state-qualifier Christopher Bryant remained undefeated at the sectional tournament with a convincing pin over Artez May of Lift for Life Academy in the championship match.  Bryant went 3-0 on the day of the tournament, advancing to state with a 23-0 record.

Juan Pedro Garduno Miranda ’21 – State Qualified, All-Sectional Honors

At heavyweight, Juan Pedro Garduno Miranda won his first match at the tournament with a pin over Jackson Fowler of Valley Catholic, then dropped his next match to Centralia’s Seth Hasekamp.  This loss put him in a tough position in the wrestle backs, where he would have to win two straight matches to place third. He met the challenge, pinning Xzavier Battaglio of Palmyra and Class 1 District 1 Champion Jacob Bader of Bishop DeBerg in the second period, bringing his overall season record to 12-5 and earning Garduno the privilege of advancing to the state tournament.

Phasakorn Cunningham ’21 – State Qualified, All-Sectional Honors

Wrestling at 195, Phasakorn Cunningham followed his district tournament path, placing third and securing his spot at the state tournament.  His first match of the day defaulted, giving him an easy win, but he then had to face tournament champion Hunter Phillips of Centralia, where he posted the loss.  However, in the second period, Cunningham made a spectacular comeback in the wrestle backs by winning both of his matches by pin over Caleb Rorhback of North Callaway and Class 1 District 1 champion Kris Weaver of New Madrid Central. Cunningham advances to state with a 20-7 season record.

Gabriel Canonico ’23 – All-Sectional Honors

Wrestling at 152, Gabriel Canonico placed fourth overall at sectionals, earning him all-sectional honors. After dropping his first match, he faced Mathias Lobb of North Callaway, who Canonico lost to twice this season. He defeated his season rival by changing his strategy, winning the match in the second period by pin. He then lost the third-place match to Brandon Giesler of Valley Catholic, bringing his season to an end with an 18-7 record.

Noah Johnson ’22

Noah Johnson finished the season with one sectional win in the second round over Braxton Sneed of Lift for Life Academy, but he fell short of the medal round.  He ended his season with a strong 18-7 record.

Landon Kjolhede ’24

Wrestling at 113, Landon Kjolhede wrestled tough but did not advance. He finished his season with a 16-9 record.

Brett Miles ’23

Wrestling in the 145-weight class, Brett Miles finished his season with an 8-11 record.
