MMA to Host Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge University in March

Missouri Military Academy (MMA) will host its annual Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge University March 24-26, 2023. Approximately 500 Scouts from across the state are expected to attend the Great Rivers Council Spring Breakout event at MMA’s Mexico, Missouri campus.

During the Merit Badge University, Scouts — including cadets of MMA’s Boy Scout Troop 1889 — will complete badges, supported by MMA staff and faculty and local/regional Scout volunteers. Scouts will be engaged in events across MMA’s 288-acre campus to earn these badges, from the rappel tower to the Olympic-sized pool to the rifle range to the stables. The Scouts will camp on MMA’s wooded back campus with established trails.

The Boy Scouts of America mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law, including loyalty, kindness and bravery.

MMA Vice President of Institutional Advancement Rob Silbaugh serves as the Troop 1889 Scoutmaster. Silbaugh began Cub Scouts in first grade and joined Boy Scouts in fifth grade. By age 15, he reached the high rank of Eagle Scout — one of the youngest Eagle Scouts in his troop.

“Shared values between Missouri Military Academy and Boy Scouts reinforce and enhance the positive benefits for our cadets who are members of Troop 1889,” said Silbaugh. “The structure and opportunities provided by the Academy enriches the experience for cadets and helps them advance in Scouts. It’s a pleasure to see their growth as young men who stand tall with achievement – in both Scouts and at MMA.”

Boy Scouts First Aid Training

Silbaugh has remained active in Scouts since achieving his Eagle Scout rank. While in college, he started a troop in the inner city of Niagara Falls, and he has taught skiing, swimming, lifeguarding, first aid, camping, canoeing, and cooking merit badges to hundreds of Scouts.  Above, Silbaugh conducts first aid training with MMA cadets.
