MMA Strong! Cadets Compete in March 2023 Powerlifting Meet

Missouri Military Academy (MMA) held its own powerlifting meet on Wednesday, March 1, 2023. The Powerlifting Club meets Monday through Thursday from 2015 to 2100 hours after study hall. Most powerlifting meets have three lifts: Bench Press, Squat, and Deadlift. This meet had four divisions, but Squat was not used. The divisions were Middle School Push/Pull (Bench Press and Deadlift), 15-16 year old Push/Pull, 15-16 year old Bench Only, and 17-18 year old Deadlift Only.

Cadet Daniel Bravo, an 8th grader from Dublin, California, was the champion of the Middle School Push/Pull with a top bench of 100 pounds and a deadlift of 245 pounds.

Eighth grade Cadet Daniel Bravo was the champion of the Middle School Push/Pull division.

In the 15-16 Push/Pull Division, Cadet Avin Hernandez, a sophomore from Mexico, Missouri, was the champion with a bench of 255 pounds and a deadlift of 425 pounds. Second place went to Cadet Adam Swenson, a sophomore from Youngstown, New York, and third place to Kruze Hagan, a sophomore from Kirksville, Missouri.

Cadet Avin Hernandez won the 15-16 Push/Pull Division.

In the 15-16 Bench Only Division, Cadet Raul Rosas, a sophomore from Mexico City, Mexico, was the champion with a final bench lift of 220 pounds. Second place went to Cadet Luke Wolf, a sophomore from Westlake Hills, Texas, and third place to Cadet Jancarlo Barajas, a junior from San Clemente, California.

Cadet Raul Rosas was the champion of the 15-16 Bench Only Division.

Cadet Landon Meyer, a junior from Moberly, Missouri, was the champion of the 17-18 Deadlift Only Division, with a lift of 315 pounds. Second place went to Ian Findley and third to Bryson Powell.

Cadet Landon Meyer was the champion of the 17-18 Deadlift Only Division.

The Wilks scoring system was used, which compares lifted weight in powerlifting between lifters of different body weight, enabling comparison of the strength of lighter and heavier lifters. In a larger meet, weight classes would have been used instead.

The MMA Powerlifting Club plans to hold more meets in the near future, which will consist of a Squat Competition and a Full Power Meet (Bench, Squat, and Deadlift).
