MMA Soccer Wins Homecoming Game

Surrounded by friends, family, and their alumni brethren, the MMA Fighting Colonels soccer team defeated Canton High School 6-1 at their 2021 homecoming contest on Colonels Field. The team now stands with a 3-3 record for the season, with nine more games ahead before postseason play.

Beginning the homecoming game, Cadet Jonathan Rukangira scored the opening goal for MMA only six minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Rukangira found the net again, beating two Canton defenders inside the box when calmly placed his shot inside the near post. Matching Rukangria’s two goals, Cadet Michael Wever took action and scored two more goals, giving the team a 4-0 lead by halftime.

After the break, Cadet Gorka-Aitor Yarte Zertuche scored the team’s fifth goal after some well-worked possession led to an opportunity at the top of the box. Yarte’s left-footed strike found the bottom right-hand corner of the goal, with the assist going to Cadet Ethan Tincknell-Hersh in the 64th minute of the game.

Canton High School’s lone goal came from a header off a corner kick, but MMA quickly added their sixth goal in retaliation when Wever slotted his hat-trick goal with only three minutes left in the game.

As the game was called – final score 6-1 – the MMA crowd erupted in cheers, bringing the first day of homecoming weekend to an exciting close.
