Five Medalists for JV Wrestling: MMA Hosts Tournament on Jan. 7

Missouri Military Academy hosted a JV wrestling tournament on Jan. 7. Wrestlers competed from MMA, Moberly, Wright City, Brookfield, Lutheran South and Winfield. Team scores were not kept, and it was the goal to give every wrestler 4-5 matches. 

"MMA had a successful day with five medalists and many hard-fought matches," says Coach Tom Allen.

At 106 pounds, Cadet Mathew Pfiefer placed third with a 3-2 record. At 113 pounds, MMA fielded two wresters who made the medal round. Cadet Caleb Xamis placed second, and Cadet Deonte Kerns placed third. 

MMA fielded several wrestlers in the 144 to 152-pound weight class. Cadet Gerardo Quiroga made the finals, lost by major decision and won second place with a 3-1 record. Cadet Roman Lowder placed fourth, Cadet Alex Snyder placed fifth, Cadet Mason Brooks placed sixth and Cadet Elijah Canonico placed eighth. 

At 175 pounds, Cadet Blake Krull won 2 out of 5 matches and placed fourth. At 190 pounds, Cadet Mbaye Diagne placed fourth, and Cadet Garrett McKinney placed fifth. At 215 pounds, Cadet Landon Meyer made the medal round but placed fourth. At heavyweight, Cadet Ben Huynh made finals and ultimately placed second, ending the day with a 3-1 record. 

MMA’s next contest will be Jan. 10 at Macon, and varsity will travel to Owensville on Saturday, Jan. 14 for a 12-team tournament.

The Year of the Rabbit —  MMA Cadets Celebrate Lunar New Year

MMA cadets are celebrating the Lunar New Year with decorations, a presentation and a field trip. Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year, is on Sunday, Jan. 22. It celebrates a time of hope that represents the opportunity to gather with family and friends to usher out the old year while welcoming a new year teeming with good luck, health, prosperity and opportunity.
