The MMA Colonels middle school wrestling team competed in their first two season matches last week. The season opener was against Mexico and North Callaway on Wednesday, Nov. 16, and they had a home meet on Friday, Nov. 18 against California.
"Many of our wrestlers are new to the sport and have a lot to learn, but they are learning fast,” says Coach Tom Allen. “The interest and enthusiasm of our middle school wrestlers is the best I have seen since starting with middle school wrestling at MMA four years ago."
The season opener (11/16) results are as follows:
- Cadet Easton Nance, 2-0, with a pin and a major decision
- Cadet Phoenix Rice, 2-1, with 2 pins
- Cadet Riley Hanley, 1-1, with a pin
- Cadet Michael Lowrey, 1-1, with a pin
- Cadet Emiliano De La Garza, 1-1
- Cadet Joshua Miller, 1-1
Other competing wrestlers included: Cadets Tru Jones, Daniel Bravo, Brayden Edwards, Damien Garritson, Austin Lampone, Josiah Emminger, Michael Emminger, Adrian Cavazos and Colten Fred. Some team members (Cadets Santiago Chabot Casas, Jeffrey Clingenpeel, William Hughes and Alexander Laszlo) did not wrestle due to not having a competitor in their weight class.
"Every wrestler, whether they won or lost, showed they have been working hard, learning the moves and increasing their cardio fitness," says Allen.
The MMA vs. California (11/18) results are as follows:
- Cadet Easton Nance, 3-0, all by pin
- Cadet Michael Lowrey, 2-0, both by pin

“The team is very proud of their accomplishments,” says Allen. “We have a high school cadre of fellow wrestlers who take pride in their younger teammates and help guide them both on the mat and through visible support on the sidelines at the matches.”
