MMA Athletic Hall of Fame: Major Walt Diehl

Aside from his talents as an outstanding counselor, teacher, mentor and football and tennis coach, Maj. Walt Diehl presided over what will surely be remembered as the Golden Age of Tennis at Missouri Military Academy. Walt’s great ability as a recruiter and motivator resulted in a nine-year period of athletic excellence, from 1983 to 1992, in which the MMA tennis team won 90 dual matches, losing only 10. During this time, Walt often wrote letters to his players during the summer urging them to return and bring a friend, preferably a friend interested in playing tennis.

From 1988 to 1992, the Colonels won 52 consecutive dual matches over four undefeated seasons. During the 1992 tennis season, the MMA Colonels were recognized as one of the premier high school tennis teams in the state of Missouri. Finishing as the 1992 district champions, sectional champions and runner-up for the Missouri state title.

Walt passed away on 3/18/2022. In recognition of his dedication to the Academy, the cadets and leading our winning tennis team for many years, we are honored to posthumously induct Maj. Walt Diehl into the 2023 Missouri Military Academy Athletic Hall of Fame.
