The Missouri Military Academy (MMA) JROTC rifle team has kicked off its 2024-25 competitive season with two wins. Colonels Rifle Coach CW4 Jason Landrum, USA (Ret), says the two consecutive wins are a strong start, and he is excited to see where the momentum will take the team.
"This year, MMA's team is a force to be reckoned with, thanks to our solid team of senior veteran shooters who have taken our new team members under their wing," says Colonels Rifle Coach CW4 Jason Landrum, USA (Ret). "Together, we are building a solid team to continue our competitiveness this year and into the future, refining the skills of our veterans and developing our new shooters to continue the MMA legacy."
The Colonels will compete in five more virtual matches each week, with an anticipated move on to the National Air Rifle League championship. In addition to the virtual matches, the team will compete in person at away matches in Washington, Ozark, and Webb City, MO. Before winter furlough, they will also compete in the CMP Regionals qualifier at home.
The team we compete against is changed dynamically weekly to pit the most competitive teams against each other. The team shoots for the virtual matches at their home MMA rifle range, with a digital assessment, scoring, and electronic submission of targets.
"This virtual system allows us to compete against teams from across the nation and even the world, as we did beating Asbach Germany (a DoDEA school)," says Landrum. "We will also use this virtual system to submit our qualification for CMP Nations in late November for our expected return to CMP Regionals in Camp Perry, OH."
Led by team co-captains Cadets Khuslen Turmunkh and Malachi Imrie, the Colonels rifle team includes the following members: Cadets Buyankhishig Batbold, Aaron Elford, Erdembayar Munkhbolor, Tru Jones, Bret Sietsema, John Trippe (team trainer), Duane Thompson, Jonathan Liberman, Carter Munsch (provisional team member), Clayton Reich, Amar Enkhbaatar, Justice Cordova, Henry Westerman, Alvaro Gonzalez, Nicholas Kavalenka, William Larson (manager), and Sean Mumm (stats officer).
About the National Air Rifle League Competition
The National Air Rifle League, which is for high school teams and junior rifle clubs, has two parts: an eight-week regular season and a post-season.
In each game, the teams compete in a Three-Position Air Rifle match. The match is modeled after Olympic Rifle competitions but adapted to high school-age athletes. Each athlete will shoot 10 shots in three different shooting positions: kneeling, prone, and standing. Scored in decimal, each shot is worth a maximum of 10.9 points. The sum of points scored in the 30 shots is the athlete's total. The team score is comprised of the best four athletes from each team.
