2020-21 Cadets Receive Fine Arts Awards

Congratulations to Missouri Military Academy cadets who have received the following fine art awards for their performance during the 2020-21 year. Scroll below for a full list of honorees, including award descriptions. View award photos here.

Philip Russell Outstanding First Year Contribution to Chorus: Jancarlo Barajas 

The award is given to a cadet who has demonstrated a high standard over the academic year in Chorus. The award honors Philip Russell ’68 who was a member of the MMA chorus as a cadet, as well as a member of the football, wrestling, baseball, tennis and Fuslieers teams.   

COL Paul F. Cherches Memorial Award: Michael Machary-Pagan 

Awarded to the cadet who is considered the most valuable band member through his dedication to the gift of music. The award honors Col. Paul Cherches, MMA’s director of music between 1950-1989.   

Jack Meyers Cup for Most Creative Cadet in Fine Arts: Zijie Zhou 

Given to a cadet who is thought to be the most creative cadet in the corps. The award honors John “Jack” Meyers ’39, who was a producer for ABC Music.   

LTC E.R. Jackson Music Award: Bryce Bowen 

Given to cadets who have the most distinguished service to the music program. The award honors Elmer R. Jackson, a former MMA employee who served MMA for nearly 50 years. Jackson served as MMA’s band director from 1931-1950 and an admissions counselor from 1950-1978.  

Alumni Association Award for Most Outstanding in Art: Dhalil Belko 

Awarded to the cadet that has shown outstanding capabilities in all art mediums. Given in honor of Javier Campuzano '82, the sculptor who designed the bronze hands sculpture, natatorium bronze plaque, and bronze Stribling III sculpture. 

Stribling Dramateer: Dhalil Belko 

Given in honor of Charles Stribling III, for his active participation in local theater productions. 

Pipe Major's Bagpipe Best Beginner: Robert Peck 

Pipe Major's Bagpipe Best Intermediate: Adam Swenson 

Pipe Major's Bagpipe Best Advanced: Clayton Nelson 

Art Achievement Award – High School: Fred Intwali 

Art Achievement Award – Middle School: Dallas Grantz 

Creative Arts Award: Charles Davidson 

Senior Award for Portfolio Achievement:

  • Alexander Chambers 

Cadet News

MMA Golf Goes to State

MMA’s golf team proved to be considerable competition this season, averaging second-place finishes in tournaments. Furthermore, Cadet Oscar Lopez qualified to compete at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) State Golf Championship, where he finished 28th out of 74 golfers.

Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce Recognizes MMA as Small Business of the Quarter

The Mexico Area Chamber of Commerce has selected Missouri Military Academy (MMA) for its quarterly small business award. The Academy was selected for the hard work and leadership demonstrated through its uninterrupted operation for three consecutive semesters, as well as through summer camps in 2020, in the midst of the COVID pandemic.
