On Monday, December 12, 2022 the MMA Colonels basketball team hosted the Silex Owls for rematch from the November 18, 2022, game where the Owls defeated the Colonels. Watch video of the game here.
The game started competitively with the Colonels taking an early lead. However, the Owls got hot during the quarter and sprinted to a 14-7 lead. By halftime, the Colonels had cut the lead to 22-17. The Colonels had established a defensive team goal for the first half and accomplished it.
According to Coach Roger Siwak, Colonels came out in the second half playing the most cohesive team-oriented basketball of the season, with strong defense and a focused drive to score more points. The Colonels hit 4 big 3’s in the 3rd quarter to cut lead to one point. Cadets Tsengeg Bayasgalan and Nathan Dempsey each scored two 3’s.
The 4th quarter was tight with the score ending in a 47-47 tie at the end of regulation play. The Silex Owls took the lead late in the first overtime period, but the Colonels were determined not to lose on their home floor. With the time ticking away and MMA down by 2, Cadet Albert Ogutu drove to the basket and tied the game, sending the game into a second overtime.
The Colonels determination was outstanding. The teamwork continued, as well as the hard work. With clutch free throws from Cadet Lucas Moreira Dos Reis Almeida, Bayasgalan, Ogutu and Dempsey, the Colonels earned a 68-60 lead. Playing smart late in the game, the team ran the clock out and won 71-66, shocking the Owls and winning the rematch.
The Colonels were led by the following cadet-athletes:
- Ogutu with 30
- Dempsey with 17
- Bayasgalan with 16
- Moreira with 6.
"The Colonels played extremely hard and had the best teamwork of the season," said Coach Siwak, adding that both he and Coach Hooker extremely proud of the team.
