College Prep: 4 Things High School Seniors Should Do in January 2025

By Cameo Wells, Director, College & Career Placement

As the new year begins, January is a critical time for high school seniors to focus on their college preparation. With application deadlines looming and financial aid opportunities opening up, staying organized and proactive can make all the difference. Whether you're finalizing college applications, applying for scholarships, or preparing for next steps, this month is the perfect time to set yourself up for success. Here are four key actions every senior should prioritize in January 2025 to stay ahead in the college admissions process.

Here’s what cadets should focus on to ensure continued success:

1. Wrapping Up College Applications

Final deadlines are approaching rapidly. Cadets should submit all remaining applications as soon as possible to maximize their opportunities. Each MMA cadet is required to gain acceptance to at least six colleges.

2. Completing FAFSA (Domestic Cadets) or CSS Profile (International Cadets)
These forms play a crucial role in determining financial aid eligibility. You will not receive an award letter until the school receives your completed FAFSA or you let them know you do not intend to file FAFSA. I am happy to schedule meetings with cadets and families to review award letters together.

3. Applying for Scholarships: Cadets should explore scholarship opportunities through:

  • Scholarship Search Engines: Platforms like GoingMerry and FastWeb offer numerous listings.
  • School Scholarships: Check each school’s website for available scholarships.
  • Local Organizations: Community groups such as the Elk's Club, Moose Club, Knights of Columbus and VFW often offer scholarships.
  • Employer Programs: Cadets and parents/legal guardians should inquire about scholarship programs offered by employers.
  • MMA Resources: I regularly update scholarship resources for cadets in Google Classroom and via DropBox for parents.

4. Completing Required Testing

Cadets who need updated test scores should register for upcoming testing opportunities:

  • ACT: February 8 (Regular deadline: January 3; Late deadline: January 20)
  • SAT: March 8 (Regular deadline: February 21; Late deadline: February 25)
  • ASVAB: Available at MMA on January 23

As you focus on these four things, I also encourage the Class of 2025 to stay on top of deadlines for official college decisions. It's also important to update scholarship records and review application portals for any incomplete materials. This important step helps ensure cadets remain on track for a successful conclusion to their senior year. I will meet with cadets soon for our third senior meeting to help.

As the MMA Class of 2025 prepares for life beyond graduation, they’re demonstrating remarkable success in the college application process. With more than $5 million in scholarships already secured, these cadets are well on their way to achieving their academic and career aspirations.

Let’s finish senior year strong! You’ve got this, cadets!
