Cadets Wang and Drenberg Take 1st in Unbreakable Iron Warrior Classic Powerlifting Competition

On October 9, 2021, Cadets Kevin Wang and Derek Drenberg – members of Missouri Military Academy (MMA)’s powerlifting team – took first-place in their respective weight classes at the 2021 Unbreakable Iron Warrior Classic, sanctioned by the American Powerlifting Association, at Capital Fitness in Jefferson City, Missouri.

Wang, a senior from St. Clair Shores, Michigan, took first place in Full Power in the 16-17 year-old, 140-pound class.

Drenberg, a senior from Macedonia, Ohio, took first place in Deadlift in the 18-19 year-old, 180-pound class.

“The cadets have trained hard for this,” said MMA Powerlifting Coach Dr. Thomas Allen. “Although only two cadets attended this first meet, we’ll grow the numbers as we progress. I’m very proud of what they have accomplished so far.”

MMA’s powerlifting team consists of 20 total lifters who practice Monday through Thursday, after study hall in the evenings. Due to COVID-19, the Unbreakable Iron Warrior Classic was the team’s first competition in three years. MMA’s next meet will be October 23 in Columbia, Missouri.

Competitive powerlifting consists of three major lifts: bench press, squat, and deadlift. Lifters can choose to do full power (which is all three lifts), push-pull (which is bench and deadlift), bench press only, or deadlift only.
