On November 21, 2019, a group of cadets visited the University of Missouri-Columbia for a classical music concert presented by the MU Choral Union, University Singers and University Philharmonio. The concert featured works by Johann Sebastian Bach and Margaret Bonds, conducted by University of Missouri Professors Dr. Paul Crabb and Dr. Barry Ford.
At the concert, the cadets witnessed the talents of MMA Music Instructor Freddie Lomas in action as he performed with the MU Choral Union. Lomas had the opportunity to join the group for this performance after he completed a choral conducting course with Dr. Crabb.
A phenomenal work to behold, Bach’s sparkling Magnificat announces the Christmas holiday, while Bond’s Ballad of the Brown King combines with Langston Hughes to provide a new perspective on nativity while incorporating influences of jazz and spirituals.
After the concert, cadets met with Dr. Crabb, who spoke to them about the value of the music and answered their questions.
“Dr. Crabb is a fantastic educator and humanitarian, dedicated to spreading important and positive messages that bring communities and cultures together,” Lomas said. “I’m happy he took time after the concert to meet and talk with our cadets.”
Special thanks to MMA Fine Arts Instructor Cheryl Morris and Mathematics Instructor Stephen Maziarz for accompanying cadets and taking photos.
