Colonels Baseball Achieves Best Season Since 1997 — MMA Team Looks Forward to New Playing Field in 2021-22

Colonels Baseball Achieves Best Season Since 1997 — MMA Team Looks Forward to New Playing Field in 2021-22

Ending the season with a 5-7 record, the Colonels baseball team earned the most wins since 1997, beating teams from Madison High School, Louisiana High School, Marion County High School, Community R-6 High School and New Franklin High School. See individual game scores here.

The team achieved this significant win under the guidance of Coach Tom Roberts, who brings over 15 years of coaching experience to the Fighting Colonels baseball team, as well as years of professional, competitive playing experience in baseball, basketball, football and golf.

According to Roberts, the team did phenomenally well, despite the challenges they faced, including frequent compromising weather (which affected both games and practice) and playing all games without a home field advantage, due to construction delays for the Brad Calvert Field renovation (see below for renovation plan).

“The team showed tenacity and grit during both games and practice,” said Roberts.

For his team leadership as coach, Roberts received a Bravo Zulu Award at the faculty and staff assembly on Friday, May 21, 2021. Regarding the award, Roberts said he was glad to help the team overcome these challenges but looks forward to next year when the team can play uninhibited.

“We have several starters returning next year with game and district competition playing experience, and the team will have an outstanding new home field ballpark to compete and practice on,” said Roberts. “I can’t wait for our next baseball season to start.”

Renovations on the baseball field may have been delayed due to weather, preventing the 2020-21 team from using the field, but incoming cadets on MMA’s 2021-22 baseball team can expect to play their first games on the home field. All dirt work has been completed, irrigation installed, and sod laid; and the old chain link fence has been replaced with a new “mini-monster” in left field – a 20-ft raised fence with an inset scoreboard.

“MMA already meets all the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) standards for play, but we are working to make the baseball field comply with college standards,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Ryan Nowlin. “With these field upgrades – combined with us having the only indoor practice facilities large enough to keep multiple indoor batting cage nets and pitching mounds up all year long – MMA’s baseball team will have every advantage to continue this winning streak.”
