An Old Boy Reflects Upon the Passing Through Ceremony

By Dominic Roberts ‘26

Awaiting the Passing Through Ceremony one year ago, my initial sentiments were far from positive. Weeks of tedious and intense drilling for the new cadets, under a relentless sun, had left me dreading the upcoming uniform inspections and parade. I found myself wishing for the event to conclude as quickly as possible.

As I fell into formation in full dress uniform, a sense of camaraderie with my fellow cadets took precedence. This unity has been a defining and consistent part of my experience during my one and a half years at MMA.  The shared hardship and the dislike of a task made bearable by the mutual support has been a recurring theme.

As we marched, my pride extended to my family.  My grandparents and uncle had traveled to witness this milestone. Their presence lent a new significance to the Passing Through Ceremony. The moment they pinned my hat brass was a profound relief.  It represented a small repayment for the dedication and support they have shown me throughout my life.

In that moment, my emotions were no longer negative. The conversations with my family filled me with a sense of joy and gratitude for being a part of MMA. This ceremony is not just a passing event.  It is a memory to be shared with family and friends.

The Passing Through Ceremony is a special moment that only happens once.  It is one you will never forget.
