On Saturday, Nov. 9, Cadets Victor Patino and Ruhan Chowrira traveled to Moberly, Mo., to audition for district concert band competition, accompanied by MMA Fine Arts Department Chair Rob McGrath and Band Instructor Freddie Lomas. McGrath participated as a judge for jazz saxophone players auditioning for the district jazz band, while Lomas served as room monitor for tenor and baritone saxophonists auditioning for district wind band.
After last minute practice upon their arrival at the competition, Patino and Chowrira performed their auditions.
Congratulations to Cadet Patino who earned the spot of second chair in the honorable mention band. Unfortunately Cadet Chowrira missed out this time but said the experience was valuable and he is determined to succeed next year.
The musicians then traveled to the Capital Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City to play at the USMC Birthday Ball.
"It is such a great experience for the boys to taste the life of a musician, getting up early to compete, rehearse and then give a performance in the evening," McGrath said. "They have seen for themselves the standard of musicianship of their peers and what the standard is to be able to succeed. Mr. Lomas and myself are very proud of both of our cadets! Well done boys!!"
