As the swim season for the Missouri Military Academy Colonels draws to a close, cadets reflect on an extraordinary journey marked by resilience, growth and unforgettable moments. Their stellar performance is underscored by their achievement of securing 18th place out of 58 teams overall at the 2023 MSHAA Boys State-Class 1 championship.

With access to a large indoor swimming pool and expert coaching staff, cadets receive top-notch training in various strokes and diving techniques. The program's emphasis on discipline has led to impressive results, including consecutive placements at the state level in recent years. Matthias McManus, Head Swimming Coach
MMA is thrilled to offer swimming as a competitive athletic program for this first time since 2013. Coach Matthias McManus will spearhead the program as head coach, bringing more than 15 years of swim coaching experience to the new team.
“We are very excited to have Coach McManus on board to revitalize our swim program here at MMA,” says Director of Athletics Dr. Ryan Nowlin. “McManus brings a wealth of knowledge to a program that has a storied and very accomplished past. We plan to put MMA back on the map as a perennial state swimming powerhouse.”
Highly qualified, McManus has served as head swim coach for YMCA competitive swimmers for 16 years, and in the same timeframe, he has served 11 years as a coach in the competitive USA swimming program. Under his guidance, swimmers have qualified for national meets, broken YMCA age group records and gone on to receive college swimming scholarships.
In addition to his coaching experience, McManus is an American Swim Coach Association (ASCA) level 2 coach, a Red Cross lifeguard instructor, a water safety instructor, a CPR and AED first aid instructor, a coaches safety training instructor and a Begin to Swim program instructor.
Tori Webber, Assistant Swimming and Diving Coach
Tori Webber has been the diving coach at MMA since 2021. She has been a swimming and diving instructor for many years. She ensures that all MMA divers learn the rules and different forms of competitive diving.

Missouri Military Academy cadet-athletes enjoyed top competitive seasons during the 2022-23 athletic year. Listed below, 15 cadets qualified individually or as part of a team for Missouri State High School Activities Association competition at the state level.
Nov. 11 and 12, for the first time in MMA history, the Colonels swim team competed at the State swim competition in St. Louis, Missouri.
This season, Missouri Military Academy Colonels swimmers have beaten eight school records in the 200M medley relay, the 200M freestyle, the 200M individual medley, the 100M freestyle, the 400M freestyle, the 200M freestyle relay, the 100M breaststroke and the 400M freestyle relay.
The swim meet on September 14, 2022 – the first home swim meet of the season – was truly legendary, with a total of six Academy records broken. Overall, MMA Colonels defeated Columbia schools Hickman, Rock Bridge and Battle by scoring 95 points — beating runner-up Hickman’s 61.
The Missouri Military Academy Colonels swim team competed at the Smith-Cotton swim meet Wednesday, September 7. The Colonels placed third behind Hickman and Rock Bridge high schools. A total of seven teams competed at the event.
