A MMA Tradition: The Missouri Military Academy Marching Band
Our band is a fixture and a tradition, performing at public parades, ceremonies, and special events throughout Missouri and beyond. The band has, with a great sense of honor, marched in many Missouri gubernatorial parades and six presidential inaugural parades.
MMA music students have access to a variety of performance options, including the Marching Band and jazz band. Students are eligible to compete in state-sponsored solo and ensemble competitions.
MMA Band Performances
The Academy sponsors concerts throughout the year that feature band, solo and ensemble performances, along with popular performances by our jazz band. Missouri Military Academy musicians participate in regional and state solo and ensemble competitions every year.
The bands are divided into middle and high school groups, however, middle school students with exceptional talent and ability may have the opportunity to join the high school band. Every entering high school student can try out for band, and each middle school student is required to learn an instrument.
Private Music Lessons
In addition to band or chorus, music students can take music appreciation and composition during the academic day. Private lessons with MMA faculty are part of the music curriculum and visiting artists occasionally provide special tutorials. This is a chance for musicians to perfect their skills in various instruments from piano to acoustic guitar.
Music students reside in one dormitory, which includes practice space on every floor. Band and choir members also take trips together to perform or to attend performances in Columbia, St. Louis or Kansas City. Band students develop a special camaraderie based on their shared passion for music.
Director of Music and Band Director
The band and music program is directed by WO2 Freddie Lomas, who grew up in Cornwall, England where he started playing the violin at the age of 8. He joined The Royal Marines Band Service as a clarinet and violin player in September 1989 and passed for duty in April 1992. Freddie traveled extensively with the Royal Marine Band and visited many countries including South Africa, Australia, Bermuda, USA, Falkland Islands, Dubai and much of Europe. He saw active duty in 2003 in Iraq as part of Op Telic.
WO2 Lomas was selected to attend the year long intensive Royal Marines bandmaster course in 2005 and earned the LRSM diploma in wind band conducting. He also passed the AMusTCL theory diploma and holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Portsmouth University, with a clarinet performance diploma from Trinity College, London. In 2009 Freddie was a team member of Khumbu Challenge, an injured service personnel trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. Freddie completed 25 years in the Royal Marines Band in August 2014, when he retired from his appointment as Warrant
