2019 Commencement Week Schedule

Thursday, May 23, 2019  

7:00 p.m. Wallace Fry Speech Competition in Centennial Gymtorium 

Held each year in honor of W. Wallace Fry, Jr. of the Class of 1903, the Wallace Fry Speech Competition celebrates the best of public speaking in composition and delivery. Selected cadets prepare thought-provoking, entertaining speeches utilizing rhetorical devices taught during recent language arts lessons. At the end of the night, winners are selected by a panel of invited judges. Watch livestream here.

8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Quartermaster Store open in Stribling Hall basement
 
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Business Office open in Stribling Hall for account payments or questions
 
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Health Center open for medication pick-up
 
9:00 a.m. Company Drill Competition at Colonels Field
 
Each company — in the form of a friendly competition — completes a prescribed set of maneuvers on the drill field and are judged by the Commandant's Department. The winning company is declared the Best Drilled Company for the school year. Watch last year's competition.
 

10:15 a.m.  Final Assembly in Centennial Gymtorium 

Accompanied by the MMA Band, the corps of cadets march into Centennial Gymtorium for Final Assembly. Then, President Geraci and program directors will address the crowd and present awards to cadets for their achievements during the academic year. Watch livestream here.

5:00 p.m. Senior Baccalaureate in Memorial Chapel 

Baccalaureate is a religious service to honor the graduating class. This quiet, reflective event focuses on students' personal growth and achievement and includes an address by the chaplain, plus special musical performances by faculty and cadets. This event is open to all cadets and their families, although attendance is not required.

6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Senior Banquet in Centennial Gymtorium 

One by one, each senior will step through an arch of sabers for the last time, then descend the stage to be formally inducted into the MMA Alumni Association.
 
Next, toasts are made to the graduating class and dinner is served. Following dinner, the class is celebrated through a photo slideshow and award ceremony. Afterwards, a cadet will deliver the Senior Class Chronicle.

The Senior Banquet is for the Class of 2019 and their families and guests only. Advance reservations are required, and all seniors are required to attend. Business dress required. View video of 2018 senior banquet.
 
 

Saturday, May 25, 2019

8:00 to 9:00 a.m. Health Center open for medication pick-up
 
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Business Office open in Stribling Hall for account payments or questions
 
8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Quartermaster Store open in Stribling Hall basement
 
9:00 a.m. Senior Review at Colonels Field
 
Senior cadets will gather to parade on the field for the last time. Following the trooping of the line, the graduating battalion commander will officially pass his rank to the incoming battalion commander, passing on command of the MMA Corps of Cadets for the next school year.
 

10:00 a.m.  Graduation Ceremony in the Centennial Gymtorium 

Following MMA's traditional graduation timeline, the Commencement Ceremony will include an award ceremony, entertainment by the MMA Band and Choir, and presentation of diplomas to each senior. President Emeritus Tony McGeorge will deliver the 2019 commencement address. The ceremony concludes with the singing of Old MMA and the retiring of the colors. Watch livestream here.

11:45 a.m. Final Formation on the MMA Front Campus 

The corps of cadets march from Centennial Gymtorium to the front lawn, forming up for the final moments of their time as cadets at MMA. Family members and friends may stand behind the roped-off area and snap photos.
 
Upon the command given by the battalion commander, graduating seniors plunge their sabers into the grass, place their hats upon their hilts, and salute as the sound of "Taps" plays in honor of their time at MMA.
 
As the final note fades, seniors will embrace one another in warm congratulations and emotional farewells. Family members, faculty and friends may then flood the grounds to offer their own congratulations.
 

Guest dress is business attire. 

 

End of Year Notes


Medication Pick Up
If your child has taken any medication through the health center this year, please pick up any remaining medication by Saturday, May 25 at 9 a.m. Any medications remaining after this time will be taken to Mexico Public Safety or Webber Pharmacy in Mexico, MO to be destroyed. 

Closing Cadet Accounts
Please settle all accounts with MMA. The business office will be open until 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 to accept payments and answer questions. MMA will withhold transcripts and diplomas if accounts are past due.

Transcripts
Apostille and transcript requests are fulfilled by the MMA registrar, Pearl Newbrough. The request forms are available on the Parent Forms Portal.

End-of-Year Travel Forms
So we know who is leaving when, how and with whom, please fill out your cadet's End-of-Year Travel Forms and return them via e-mail to Executive Administrative Assistant to the Commandant Amy Wells at Amy.Wells@missourimilitaryacademy.com or Director of Transportation Mark Tompkins at Mark.Tompkins@missourimilitaryacademy.com. You may also return the form via fax to 573-581-5095. 

Check Out Times
On Friday, cadets in grades 7 - 11 in good standing may check-out from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., at which time all cadets are expected back on campus, no overnights. All seniors must attend the Senior Banquet and may check out at its conclusion with the expectation they return by 10:00 p.m., no overnights.

Flights
Please make flight reservations to coincide with the weekend activities and to ensure adequate travel time between the MMA campus and your chosen airport. The commandant's office encourages families to utilize the Columbia Regional Airport whenever possible. Please utilize the End-of-Year Travel Form to inform the Commandant of your travel arrangements.
