Varsity Sports Overview

Missouri Military Academy has a rich tradition of athletics dating back to 1889.  "The Fighting Colonel's" have historically competed against other schools in baseball, basketball, cross country, drill, equestrian, football, golf, Raiders, rifle, soccer, swimming, tennis, track, and wrestling.  The athletic landscape in the State of Missouri is overseen and governed by the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA).

MSHSAA divides the public and private schools throughout the state into multiple classifications based upon their high school enrollment figures and the number of schools across the state participating in a certain sport.  For example, since most schools in the state play competitive football, MSHSAA has created six different classes.  While in wrestling, not as many schools have wrestling programs, so they have only created four different classes.

Historically, Missouri Military Academy has participated in MSHSAA's Class 1 division based upon on our high school enrollment numbers.  Eight years ago, MSHSAA approved a vote by public schools across the state to implement two "multipliers" that will affect MMA now and in the future.  First, the "Gender-Multiplier" requires single gender boarding schools to double their enrollment, as far as classification is concerned.  Secondly, a "competition multiplier" for private schools across the state because of the recruitment factor of a private school.  This was meant to even the landscape for interscholastic athletic competitions, and in many cases it forces schools such as Missouri Military Academy to play schools 3-10 times our actual enrollment.
