Duke of Edinburgh's International Award Program
The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award was founded in 1956 in the United Kingdom by Her Majesty the Queen's husband, HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award boasts operations in 144 countries around the world and is now entering its fourth year of operations in the United States.
The Award is a unique self-development program available to young people worldwide aged 14-25, equipping them with life skills to make a difference within themselves, their communities, and the world.
Missouri Military Academy was the first school in Missouri to offer the award and the first in the country to offer it as a full-time element of its school programs.
Participants embark on a wide variety of activities and projects that span four award sections:
All with the goal to enable our cadets to "Better themselves while helping others."
How we implement the program at MMA
Award participation is available to all cadets ages 14 and up. Cadets in grades 9 and 10 are required to enroll in the award program and are encouraged to complete the necessary tasks to achieve the Bronze, Silver or Gold award levels. This is part of the overall challenging atmosphere at MMA, and another means by which we encourage boys to continuously strive for more. They are not required to complete the program however many find it to be fun, challenging and a rewarding experience.
Physical Fitness, Skill Development, and Community Service are already woven into the fabric of the MMA experience, so completion of this segment of the award is already coordinated within our program. Participating students are required to complete and report one hour per week in the areas of physical fitness, community service and skill development for a specified amount of time, depending on their award level. At the end of that time period, they will complete their Adventurous Journey as a group under the guidance of MMA staff who have completed the required training through the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award program.
