MMA's English as a Second Language (ESL) Director Leah Averitt was named the Outstanding Teacher for Fall 2017 Semester by CAO BG Rick Geraci Monday morning.
"Averitt is recognized as the Outstanding Teacher for her leadership of the ESL Department, excellence in teaching, involvement and support of campus activities, and ability to motivate students," Geraci said.
Being recognized for her work was very gratifying, Averitt said.
"I am so excited and honored to be named Outstanding Teacher," she said. "I have put in a lot of hours to make sure we are running the best program possible, and it feels really nice that my peers recognized that."
Averitt has been teaching at MMA since July 2017, and has been teaching ESL since 2012. She added that she has high hopes for her budding program.
"My personal goal for the fall 2017 semester was to build the structure that would support a growing ESL program and both our current and future ESL students," she said. "My students have been working on understanding the specifics of different verb tenses in English, which is pretty challenging."
Teaching ESL students to be confident speakers and writers of English is her departments main philosophy, Averitt said, and MMA is a great place to see that goal come to fruition.
"MMA is and has been the best work environment that I have ever experienced, with a ton of positive support for our goals," she said. "I totally love MMA, and am so happy that I am thriving here."
