What is the Valentine Ball?

The Ball is an annual MMA tradition that dates back many years. It takes the place of the typical high school spring Prom and is sponsored by the Junior class every year. A Valentine Ball Queen is chosen among the cadets’ dates by the Junior Class Officers and is crowned by Miss Missouri.

Why does Miss Missouri attend?

This is a special tradition that originated when MMA began hosting the Miss Missouri pageant more than 40 years ago. The Junior Class President has the honor of escorting Miss Missouri during the evening.

What is the dress code?

The Ball is considered formal. Cadets wear their winter dress uniforms and their dates are expected to wear formal dresses or gowns. Parents and family members are asked to comply with the dress code, which includes cocktail dresses, gowns or suits for women and suits or tuxedos for men.

Are there any special activities at the Ball?

MMA follows many customs of a formal military ball. Guests and cadets are asked to participate in a receiving line at the beginning of the ball. A Grand March is held to formally open the ball, and a crowning ceremony will take place to select the 2013 Valentine Ball Queen.

Can we attend the Ball if we don’t attend the dinner?

Yes – the dinner is optional and is available to cadets and families who would like to have a formal meal prior to the Ball. Dinner tickets must be purchased in advance here.

Is my son required to attend the Ball? Does he have to have a date?

Attendance is not mandatory but is encouraged, since this event is a unique MMA tradition and is part of the overall military school experience. Cadets are not required to bring a date – many attend with their families and everyone has a great time.

Are there places in town to purchase a corsage for my son’s date?

Missouri Military Academy recommends Garden Gate Florist in Mexico – 573.581.4275 or Wonneman’s Flowers and Gifts, also in Mexico – 573.581.5661. Advance orders are strongly recommended.

Will there be a photographer to take formal photos?

Mr. Steve Biggers will be on site to take photos of cadets and their dates and/or their families. Photos will be available for purchase directly from Mr. Biggers.
