Second annual MMA "Jazz on the Lake" concert to be held May 20

The Missouri Military Academy Department of Music proudly brings “Jazz on the Lake” back to the MMA campus for the second year. The MMA Jazz Band will perform a number of familiar set pieces beginning on the lawn of Teardrop Lake beginning at 6:00 pm on Saturday, May 20. Special guest performers for the 2017 “Jazz on the Lake” concert will be the Columbia Jazz Orchestra.

The event debuted in 2016 and was widely attended. Guests are encouraged to arrive at 5:00 pm and to bring blankets and lawn chairs to spread out across MMA’s spacious front lawn. There is no admission fee for the concert, but eight-seat tables are available for sponsorship for $20 per table. Proceeds from sponsored tables will support the MMA music department.

The MMA music department, headed by retired Royal Marines bandmaster WO2 Freddie Lomas, features a marching band, a concert band, jazz band, a newly formed orchestra comprised of middle school cadets on strings, a chorus and various solo musicians who take private lessons as part of their studies at Missouri Military Academy. MMA music instructor Rob McGrath, also a retired member of Her Majesty’s Royal Marine Band, is an active part of the music program. Prior to joining the MMA faculty in 2016, he was a professional jazz musician and teacher in the U.K. He is a member of the Columbia Jazz Orchestra.

The Columbia Jazz Orchestra was formed as a community big band in March 2014, by lead altoist Jim Scheffer and lead trumpeter Brandon Hall. When the band first formed, it was mainly made up of local musicians and Mizzou graduates. The band performs in a monthly residency at the Broadway Brewery in Columbia and at various venues and establishments throughout Missouri.
For reserved table sponsorship purchase, contact Kevin Quinn, 573-581-1776 Extension 230 or Kevin.Quinn@MissouriMilitaryAcademy.org.

Parking is free along 204 North Grand Street or in MMA’s Gymtorium parking lot on Pollock Street. Alcohol will not be served and may not be consumed during the concert. Inclement weather will move the event to the MMA Gymtorium.
