Missouri Military Academy offers two distinct levels for international students who require ESL. Our comprehensive program manages all student ability levels from beginner through intermediate.
Small classes provide individualized instruction, expression of ideas and opinions, and teach the skills required for non-ESL classes in science, mathematics, social studies and fine arts.
The total international student experience at MMA includes both ESL and mainstream courses, participation in sports, activities, fine arts and social and cultural events. International cadets are fully integrated into the Corps of Cadets.
Missouri Military Academy’s teachers are experienced in teaching international students, and the faculty is sensitive to the students’ need to adapt to living away from family and studying abroad. The Director of International Relations helps students with visas, passports, and many other issues as needed.
Mid-year or semester enrollment is possible. International students may enroll in January. Students develop their English language proficiency while being fully immersed in mainstream classes, sports, activities, music and social and cultural events.
Students take classes in math, science, social studies, technology, and fine and practical arts. Students are tested for English proficiency upon entry and at the end of the school year. Academic grades and credit are issued for all classes taken during the spring semester.
It is anticipated that students who complete the spring semester will enroll in Missouri Military Academy for the next school year. Also, students are eligible to enroll in MMA’s summer school, The New ERA – Enrichment & Recovery Academy, and take additional courses.
International applicants are required to take an English Proficiency Exam during the admissions process. The exam will be forwarded to you by MMA. The exam scores are used to assess English proficiency only, and are not used to determine admission acceptance. The TOEFL or SLEP are not required; however, the Admissions Committee would prefer to receive the scores if available. Applicants with all levels of English ability are welcome to apply. Applicants who do not score above the 70th percentile on the English Proficiency Exam are required to attend the English as a Second Language Orientation and Camp.
The English as a Second Language Orientation and Camp is an intensive, ten-day ESL camp prior to the start of school in August. The focus of the program is to assess each student’s abilities in reading, speaking, and writing of English, to determine appropriate placement in mainstream classes, and to provide an intensive introduction to English. The program also provides time for students to acclimate to the new school environment while enhancing their knowledge of Missouri Military Academy and life in the United States.
