Julian Rosado Machias ’89 and Alonso Vega Albela ‘89

When Julian Rosado Machias and Alonso Vega Albela parted ways after graduating in the MMA Centennial Class of 1989, they couldn’t have predicted how their lives would intersect in the future.

A few years ago, while on a plane home to Mexico City for the holidays, the two ran into each other and discovered they both lived in San Diego.  Their friendship picked up where they left off, and soon after, the two decided to start a restaurant together.  Their partnership would result in Hacienda de Vega, a restaurant that made the list of the 100 best Hispanic restaurants in the U.S., according to Hispanic Magazine.  It’s a long way from their days at MMA, when Alonso was a member of the color guard and Julian served as an MP. But they both appreciate and value what they learned while at MMA: “responsibility, accountability and hard work.”

Julian recently became an MMA parent when he enrolled his son as a freshman this year and both are eagerly planning to return for their 20th reunion in October.

If you’re ever in the Escondido area, be sure to visit their restaurant. In the meantime, check out their web site at www.haciendadevega.com
